Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #19

Dear CSA-ers,

This week’s preassembled bag will include Malabar Spinach, Radishes (last round for a few weeks), Hot Peppers Mix, Listada Eggplant, Romaine, Mixed Tomatoes, Green Beans, and Tulsi Basil. Custom orders should be placed between now and Tuesday evening on the website at: https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market

This coming week promises to be a really hot one and we are already intending to take some precautions to protect our employees from the extreme midday heat. That also means it’s going to be really hot for our plants, which is unfortunate, but kind of par-for-the-course in August. If you’ve been following the water-line replacement saga, you will be happy to hear that the new line is live and is so far working very well, though we are still chasing down some issues with the recycled frost-free pipes in individual tunnels. With luck that will all be resolved by the extreme heat of Monday.
August and September are challenging months in Kentucky. Summer vegetables are beginning to lose steam and fall ones are not yet big enough to harvest. Historically this has been a real challenge for the farm, but this year we feel we are better prepared. This is partially due to Patrick and Hannah’s efforts to chase down the details and perform the tedious calculations involved with midseason nutrition management for our solanaceous crops. Essentially, crops that grow and produce for many months like tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers begin to use up the soil amendments they were originally given. Using precisely mixed amount of organic liquid fertilizers applied via our water conserving drip irrigation, the plants can be given the boost they need to keep growing delicious vegetables.
This week’s highlighted vegetable is the pepper. We’re growing a wide assortment of peppers this year. We have 3 different sweet peppers, a full bell, a baby bell, and a long horn-shaped Italian heirloom called ‘Corno di Toro’. For hot peppers, we have a hot Jalapeno (green), a Poblano (dark green), and a Slavic heirloom called ‘Czech Black’ which is nearly black. Of those, Jalapenos are the hottest, with the Czech Black and Poblano being less hot respectively. Due to getting a late start on peppers, most will come to you this week tender and green, but as the season goes on, you’ll start to see more color, particularly with the sweet peppers. We hope you enjoy our selection, and we’d really like to hear your input on our pepper varieties at some point. There are so many types of peppers, we’d love to get some customer feedback on which ones you want to see us grow in the future.
As always, we thank you for your dedication and support to our farm. We’re so happy to be a part of your community.
Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

CLG:  Opening Bell: Honey, Potatoes, Okra, Squash!

Good afternoon!

It sure was nice to get 3 inches of much needed rain on Saturday! Now watch out for the heat Monday and Tuesday. We are starting to see some fall crops ready for harvest. The extras table will have lots of goodies so come early on Friday.

School starts back this week, and that means many folks will be getting back into the school routine. Summer break was fun with lots of travel and vacations, but now it’s time to get back in the habit of preparing locally grown meals a few days a week. So much nutritious food is being grown right here!

Strack Farm has just listed potatoes, okra, squash, and more.

Tammy Sue will have her items listed this week and next, but then will be unlisted until fall as she will be traveling with trade shows. Stock up on her wonderful soaps, etc.

At Cedar Rock Ridge I’ve been picking lots of figs every day for several weeks. These go straight to Maria so she can make her delicious fig preserves! If you haven’t tried some, you should. Tastes great on corn muffins, or on French toast with cream cheese. Figs!

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. We have over 575 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

Stones River Market:  Market is OPEN -- See you Wednesday

Welcome to this weeks Market, Open until 10 pm Monday. Order early before quantities available run out!

Congratulation to Our Birthday/Anniversary Drawing recipients: $25 Deborah Hunt, $10 Stacey Owen, $5 Kathy Bobo and $5 Kelsey Wells.

Did you know there are only 3 Markets until the Labor Day weekend, time to get stocked up for the last Holiday of Summer!

Several of our Growers are having the ‘it is the end of Summer’ and it is time to get planting for the Fall Produce season! Coming soon: Lettuce, Radish, Spinach, Onions, Kale, Herbs, Carrots, Arugula, Field Peas, Pumpkins, Winter Squash varieties like Butternut, Spaghetti, Acorn and Carnival.

News From Our Growers:

Oakview Farm: Do you have the Summer Squash Doldrums? Our Early Pumpkins and Early ‘Winter’ Squash available this week and Whole Chickens available this week! Our Chickens have access to a new patch of grass everyday and we supplement their diet with squash and other veggies from our garden, along with layer crumbles. We do not use chemicals on our garden. The proceeds from everything we sell will go towards starting our summer camp for children with hearing loss.

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: I’m finally catching up to myself, and have added a few more new things to the market. Look for these and maybe a couple more: Fresh-cut Variegated Oregano, Southern Shield Wood Fern, Citronella geranium (“Mosquito Plant”), and Pilea nummularifolia (“Creeping Charlie”). I’ve expanded the offerings of “Hens & chicks” plants, now with green foliage, red foliage, and an old-fashioned type with smaller leaves but lots of babies.

It might be a little warm to transplant these to your garden right now. But you can always buy now to be sure you have them, and leave them in the pot in a shady area till the temperature drops just a little bit. That’s what they’d be doing at my greenhouse anyway!

I also have a beautiful basket of Rex begonias, a wooden basket with a handle containing two large plants, each in its own gallon pot. This basket would look beautiful on porch or patio for the summer, and inside for winter.

Crossing Creek Farm: Has added 100% Grass-fed Ground Beef to the Market. They raise registered Southpoll Grass Cattle as a 100% grass-fed cow to calf operation. The herd is supplemented with free-choice organic kelp, sea salt and minerals from New Country Organics. This produces an amazingly delicious beef-remember: “cook it low and slow”.

Rainbow Hill Farm: Gala Apples have arrived along with the Gingergolds.

From our Meat Producers: Farrar Farms, Sow’s Ear Piggery, Caney Fork Farms, Crossing Creeks Farm all have some great selections of meats to make your meals great. From Beef, Pork, Lamb and Chicken. Grill, roast, broil, boil…delicious anyway you prepare them.

Look forward seeing you “On the Porch” at Quinn’s Mercantile Wednesday August 14th from 5:00 – 6:30pm, please contact me if you are unable to make delivery or are running late, please phone, email or text me so we can make arrangements to get your order to you.

DIET OVERVIEW #4

We have been examining diet plans. Last week we looked at Weight Watchers which US News & World Report ranked as their best “Biggest Loser.” This week we’re looking at prepackaged plans.

This sweet lady regained mobility and reversed an ostomy after losing 100+ lb on Optavia, a prepackaged diet food program that includes coaching.

The HMR (Health Management Resources Program) ranked first for FAST weight loss plans among this group. It, like many others is designed to reduce calories via prepackaged meals & meal replacements (shakes or snacks). Each plan claims to be nutritionally balanced, and all encourage healthy lifestyle changes & increased physical activity. Some plans, like HMR & Optavia include coaching in their strategies. Other companies using this model include Jenny Craig, Noon & Nutrisystem.

PROS

  • You don’t have to cook.
  • Delivered to your door.

CONS

  • Cost
  • Highly processed ingredients
  • Lack of variety/ becoming bored with choices over time.

M@D Note – While many of these plans work and work well, they are not without their risks as the reliance on soy & highly processed ingredients can wreck havoc in the body.

MARKET CHITCHAT

“Time flies when you’re having fun.” Even with the heat and dust we enjoy our Fridays with you so much every week that sometimes noon just sneaks up on us. Yesterday was like that. Just wanted to say we appreciate being part of your lives.

Repeat from last week: This is a tough time of year for farmers. Most of the summer crops are petering out. Weeds are trying to take over, and the soil is still too hot for many cool weather seeds to germinate. That being said, KUDOS to our growers who are managing to keep things going during this transition between growing seasons. Because of this we are suspending the New & Relisted Products section in this section for a few weeks. New products (like those from Bella Eden Farms) are visible at the top of the Market page.

THIS WEEK’S GROWER NOTES

We have the best Growers in the Wiregrass! Please learn more about them on our Grower Page.

GRIER ACRES: Harry and Jeannie are doing well but staying busy. There is a family of coons on the property. They have unfortunately ate most of the pears we had planned to sale. Okra is doing great! It finally survived the bug infestation. Our tomatoes are limited to the cherry and Campari varieties. We also have some bell peppers and will also have some ghost peppers and habanero growing. We have some mildly hot Thai peppers. Our watermelons are almost ready. We are looking to finish our fencing and hopefully start a goat journey. Jeannie loves her chickens. She has named them and has zip ties on them so she dote on them even more. We are considering doing a small winter garden. Hope everyone is having a great week.

DANNY’S GREENS: The greens are growing too slow in the heat to harvest this week but will be available the following week. Danny has green onions & carrots in the ground for sales later this fall.

AVALON FARMS:

Say hello to the new girls! They’ll be stepping up and providing much needed extra eggs this winter. We should start finding eggs in their area in the next few weeks. That means we have to get busy and get their egg-mobile finished. We’ll be running a series on the build progress.
