Stones River Market: Market is OPEN -- See you Wednesday
Welcome to this weeks Market, Open until 10 pm Monday. Order early before quantities available run out!
There are 2 Markets left before the Labor Day weekend, time to get stocked up for the last Holiday of Summer!
Excited to announce a new Grower to the Market, please welcome Quarter Spring Farm from Liberty. They will be offering quartered chicken cuts, raw chicken feet and necks (great for stocks or a natural dog treats!) and goat’s milk soap, unscented and scented this week.
Enjoy the Market this week, many great things to choose from all our Growers.
News From Our Growers:
RnR Farm: back this week with delicious lettuce choices.
Oakview Farm: Fresh whole chicken for sale- the price is reduced from last week so get them while you can! We also have pie pumpkins (great for roasting, grilling or soups), green beans, winter squash and lemon balm available. We don’t use pesticides/chemicals in our garden and our chickens are given a fresh patch of grass everyday with no hormones or antibiotics!
The Sugared Spoon: This week I’ve got Chocolate Cherry Brownies! Cherries folded right into the batter and finished with a white chocolate drizzle. Also, if anyone wants an assorted dozen cookies, just order it as a dozen of chocolate chip and leave me a message to make it assorted. Assorted dozens will come with Choc chip, peanut butter, Snickerdoodle, oatmeal raisin and butterscotch-toffee.
Rainbow Hill Farm: New Apple this week is Ozark Gold, has Golden Delicious in its breeding and is flavorful and more tart, also have the Gala Apples available this week along with Summer Squash, Zucchini, Sweet Peppers and Tomatoes.
Carole’s Herbs (CS3 Farms): We have two healthy peanut butter alternatives – Sunflower Seed Butter and Pumpkin Seed Butter. Check out our Cardamon Honey and lightly heated Habanero Honey offerings.
Short Mountain Cultures: Highlight this week is GINGER BEET KVASS I never would have thought so many folks in Woodbury would love this Ukrainian sour beverage so much! Beet kvass is definitely what’s up when it’s so dang hot. The electrolytes from the salt are a life saver, not to mention the vitamins and minerals from the beets. And to top it all off the wild yeast fermentation created a slightly sour profile that makes my mouth water.
Flying S Farms: Yukon Gold Potato are available this week in half pound or pound options.
From our Meat Producers: Farrar Farms, Sow’s Ear Piggery, Caney Fork Farms, Crossing Creeks Farm, Oakview Farm and Quarter Spring Farm all have some great selections of meats to make your meals great. From Beef, Pork, Lamb and Chicken. Grill, roast, broil, boil…delicious anyway you prepare them.
Look forward seeing you “On the Porch” at Quinn’s Mercantile Wednesday August 21st from 5:00 – 6:30pm, please contact me if you are unable to make delivery or are running late, please phone, email or text me so we can make arrangements to get your order to you.

Good morning!
The market is open for ordering this morning, as usual. Please remember to check for new items in all the categories. I haven’t been able to check for new items, and now I won’t be doing so. You see, I don’t see. My dog tripped me in the driveway and my glasses went flying and were badly bent. My son gave them some first aid, but they need to see the eyeglass doctor. Till then, I’m not using my eyes any more than I really have to, because I’ve already managed to acquire a good headache. So please check for new products and let me know if you find any!
Thank you, and see you Thursday or Friday at your choice of pickup location.
Please bless your managers (who donate their time) and farmers, and forward this message to at least one friend who might be interested in encouraging local small business!
Blessings,
Linda & Michael

CASA PERDIDO
This has been an exciting month. Last week we welcomed Bella Eden Farms and their great skin care products. This week we’re welcoming an old friend who is no stranger to Market at Dothan. Those of you who attended Open House in years past may remember Don and Mary Opiary who often joined us. Don has left this life and Mary has become involved in her family’s business. I’m going to let her tell the rest . . .
I sell all natural gourmet vinegars which are made in small batches at Perdido Vineyards. Perdido Vineyards has been in business for 40 years. This is the first Family Vineyard to be approved by the state since prohibition. The vinegars are muscadine based. They are grown at the Vineyards. All fruit use are grown by Alabama farmers. The variety includes satsuma, blueberry and balsamic fig and are very healthy and high in antioxidants.
NEW PET PRODUCT
This is Bella. She contacted my husband this week looking for pet owners who could use goats milk for their animals. Of course we were interested! I make a fabulous “get well” concoction for our canines that uses goats milk, pumpkin and raw eggs. We’ve seen it work miracles, and the opportunity to get fresh is an unexpected blessing.
Bella went through several breeds of goats before settling on Lamancha dairy goats which are currently giving her two gallons a day. It’s more than what both our families can use. Then I remembered how many times I’ve received calls from people looking for fresh goats milk and the light bulb went on . . .
You will find Bella’s fresh Goat’s Milk on the Market page under Pet Products. It comes in glass half gallon jars and we ask that you bring one to replace the one you receive your order in. They are available at most thrift stores. Bella will be sending Market at Dothan the freshest milk available.
Please know that this product is for PETS ONLY. Alabama does not allow the sale of fresh goats milk for human consumption and we committed to honoring that and will ask your pets name when you pick up. And if you’re making soap that’s ok too.
We hope you’ll support this very knowledgable and industrious young lady. Years before Market at Dothan our own daughter raised grass fed beef as a college project. Bella is already making a difference in people’s lives and planning for a career helping others. The goats are her college project and we are excited to be a part of that.
MARKET CHITCHAT
So much has been happening that we’re taking a little break from our “Diet” series. There is no doubt many of you are familiar with some of the things we have covered, and at the same time, there are things yet to cover that are more recent and not widely known yet. We’ll get back to it soon. In the meantime we’re excited to welcome our new vendors and new products.
By way of disclaimer, in case this newsletter doesn’t “look right” we are working with a new (to us) service for including photos in the newsletter. The good news is that its easy to use. The bad news is that if it doesn’t work everybody in our Market family will know!
THIS WEEK’S GROWER NOTES
We have the best Growers in the Wiregrass! Please learn more about them on our Grower Page.
AVALON FARMS: The farm is shifting into fall and yet there is one last planting of summer squash that will be making in a few weeks.
First wave of kale transplants are on the front porch, avoiding grasshoppers. And I’m still reading seed catalogs trying to decide what else to order.
What happens when you have 2 fairly intelligent people with access to all the internet and a bunch of tools? After finding fancy professional egg-mobiles online (for $8,000!!!!) they decide to build their own!
Step 1: Buy an old boat trailer
Step 2: Remove unneeded parts
Step 3: Start building subfloor
DANNY’S GREENS A few have been listed. There will be more available when the nights start cooling down.

Miami County Locally Grown: A great Fair for Michael Bair!
Thanks to Michael’s mom for sharing the good news about Michael’s 2019 Miami County Fair experience!
“Michael had an awesome fair this year! And, no…even though he raised chickens that’s not what he shows at the fair. The only thing he enjoys about his chickens is the flavor! His new apple brats are his favorite!
This year at the fair he was awarded a Youth Leadership Award.
With his steer Evel Knevel he won Grand Champion open class dairy beef steer. And Grand Champion Born and Bred Dairy Beef Steer. (Which means it was bred and born in Miami County…in this case right on our own farm!)
He also won Showman of Showmen in Dairy Beef.
With his Jersey cow Faith he was Reserve Champion Jersey in both open class and Jr. Fair show."
Annette Bair

And be sure to check out the pictures of Michael and his prize-winning cattle on our Facebook page! Thanks for sharing, Annette!:-)
