Good morning!

Welcome to Middle Tennessee Locally Grown online farmers’ market! As always, the market opened for ordering Sunday morning at 8 am (usually earlier), and will be open till Tuesday evening at 10 pm.

Everything you see on our website is the “cream of the crop” from local farmers, the best products picked and made with pride especially for YOU! When you place an order with our farms, you know you are supporting your friends and neighbors, located in Middle Tennessee.

Please look around at various categories, as I may have missed some of the new items. Also please be sure to read the section of the page entitled “Important Ordering and Pickup Information.”

Pick up your order in either Manchester or Tullahoma, and let us know via the drop-down menu which location you prefer for pickup. Your location may change from week to week as you prefer.

It’s National Farmers Market Week! (August 4-10) Plan to introduce a friend to our fresh local goodies on Thursday or Friday! Even if your friend didn’t place an order, there will be a few ‘extras’ available for purchase.

Farm News of the Week

Triple T Farms sends this note:

Just wanted to let you know we’ve been low on stock lately, but have recently picked up some new meat from the processor. I’ve updated our inventory on the marker and we have several cuts available that we’ve been lacking lately. Back in stock are: ribeye steak, sirloin steak, sirloin tip roast and ox tail.

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse has added a few new items. Look for more next week!

(L to R) Southern Shield Wood Fern, Fresh Cut Variegated Oregano.

Market News

It’s back to school week for both the Athens public schools and UGA, and the town is already a madhouse. It’s easy to get caught up in the new routines and forget about the old, like picking up your ALG orders on Thursday. Please check the phone number on your account to be sure it’s one you can be reached at on a Thursday evening. I start making calls about 7:30, and every week there is someone who has forgotten completely. I know I’d forget myself sometimes if I weren’t already there, so there’s no shame in that.

Try to enjoy the back-to-school madness this week. Even if you have no little ones yourself in school, the town certainly changes this week from the sleepy small town it’s been the last few months. Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park, and Wednesday evenings downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is back as well, Saturdays from 9 to 1, and you can watch for weekly news here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County farmers market is held every Saturday 8 to noon in downtown Watkinsville. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on Saturdays from 9 to 2pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from 11 to 3pm. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Fresh Harvest for August 4th

Market News

Hello!
RnR Farms and Pig and Leaf Farm have a lot of lettuce this week. It’s a good week to stock up. Local lettuce lasts for a couple of weeks.

The Hershbergers are beginning to get in a few watermelons and cantaloupes. As with all of Fresh Harvest products, we guarantee everything that we sell, particularly the melons since it’s hard to detect their ripeness. The cantaloupes and watermelons that I have had from Abraham have all been very good. Maybe it’s because I know the secret on how to pick ‘em! If you ever get a melon that’s under or over ripe, please let me know and I’ll credit your account.

I believe that this is the last week for the Peach Truck assuming that it wasn’t last week.

Bloomy Rind is in the process of moving, but they will be back next week.

Dozen Bakery cookies and breads, eggs, granola, honey, and coffee are in abundance.

You have until Tuesday night to place your order.
Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!

If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.

Miami County Locally Grown:  We close tonight at 8!

So grateful for all the fresh produce on the market, particularly with the unfavourable weather this season. Excessive rains, invincible pests, and long dry spells are not discouraging in the same way when your livelihood and paycheck don’t depend upon such variables beyond your control.

We met a fellow farmer this week, and when he said he hadn’t seen a year so poor for growing and so hard on farmers since he was young and starting out in the 50s, we were shocked. We knew how badly we and others were struggling, as you can only compensate for the weather to a point, but to hear someone with decades more experience than us validate our struggles… Just par for the course, really. That’s just Farming! You have to be optimistic and hopeful!

And aren’t we grateful for everyone committed to that noble, difficult, and delicious profession?

So Thank You to all our farmers, and a heartfelt Thank You also to our customers who help us continue on and make it all worthwhile :-).

And don’t forget to enter our drawing for our 6 Gift Baskets! Details on our website www.miamicounty.locallygrown.net/market on the MCLG category!

CLG:  Opening Bell: Chicken, Peppers, Breads, Honey!

Good afternoon!

Drewry Farm and Orchard brought some beautiful Gala apples to market on Friday. Kenny will be picking more this week, so put a bag of apples in your shopping cart and enjoy! Unfortunately, peach harvest may be ending. Things looked very promising early on, but an invasive insect, plum corculio, has caused extensive peach losses. I know Kenny and his team put in a lot of work in the orchards year-round, so our heartfelt thanks go out to them.

At this time of year, many of our vegetable growers have little produce being harvested as we wait for the fall crops to begin maturing. We will soon have a good variety of late summer vegetables: potatoes, cucumbers, cantaloupe, okra, fall squash, tomatoes…

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. We have over 625 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

Please check your email a few minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thanks!
