Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Last Call - Corn - Fresh Harvest

Market News

Hello!
A repeat message from last night. Probably the only chance for corn this season.
From Vida, the grower:
“Tender Sweet Corn – A mix of Ambrosia and Peaches and Cream, you will want to eat this corn every night off the cob and put some away in the freezer. Grown organically in Bell Buckle, TN. The early maturities have been shared with friends around the farm and everyone has loved it – since most everyone around here has a garden, it means a lot when we get an A+ from the locals.
This corn was grown without any chemicals and only fertilized with chicken litter.
1/2 dozen $3.50
Full dozen $7.00
Vannatta Farms is a century farm located in Bell Buckle, TN.
The farm has hundreds of acres of row crops – corn, soy beans and wheat, plus 175 Angus cows and 6 broiler houses.”

The Market will remain open until Tuesday evening for you to place an order for this week.

Here is some information on how Fresh Harvest works.
*If you see an item as Sold Out, write in the Comment section at check out that you would like that item if more becomes available. We’ll try our best to add it to your order.
*PayPal payments have to be manually added to your account. There will be a delay to crediting your account due to me needing to take time to do the bookkeeping. I also have to go to each account with cash or check payments. These are sometimes delayed by procrastination or being busy. You can still place an order even though it may cause your account to be “overdrawn”. There is no penalty for going into the minus column. Sometimes I’m a little slow in getting to the bank to make deposits, but it eventually happens.
• If you recruit a new customer to Fresh Harvest and they open an account with a $50 deposit, we will credit your account $10 for each new customer who signs up. They will need to tell me your name, so that I can credit your account. Word of mouth has been our best advertising. Any help that you can provide is greatly appreciated.
• Every week, we leave orders at the church for customers who cannot arrive at Trinity before 6pm. This has worked well for those who have difficulty with the 4-6pm window. Please let me know if you need me to leave your order at the church.
• The bag that you receive each week is to be brought back with your next order. We have been negligent in telling new customers how this works. Don’t feel bad if you return multiple bags, it happens all the time.
• We’re into reusing and recycling. Our clean egg cartons, honey jars, paper and plastic bags, berry containers are some of the items that we can reuse. If we can’t reuse the returned items, we’ll recycle them.
• We do guarantee everything that we sell. If you ever have a problem, please let us know and we will credit your account.
• If there are other products or growers that you think should be a part of Fresh Harvest, please let me know.

Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!

If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.

COMING TO YOUR

GREENEVILLE FARMERS MARKET

SATURDAY

AUGUST 3

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #17

Dear CSA-ers,

This week’s preassembled bag will include spinach, leeks, mixed peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, parsley and mint. Custom orders may be placed between now and Tuesday evening on the website at https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market
For such a rainy start to the summer, it has suddenly become very dry. If you’ve been following along, you will recall that we are amidst a large irrigation infrastructure improvement project. This has inconvenienced some of our vegetable production as there are two plots that currently cannot be watered. The good news is, the project is so far proceeding well. Over 500 feet of trench for waterlines were dug through Ray, Patrick, and Eric’s efforts last week. With luck the project will be completed some time this week.
The plots containing the next rotation of radishes, beets, and carrots look SO good. We are all really glowing with how well they are coming along. Our growing and harvesting process is improving all the time and we are excited to keep delivering the results to you. Peppers and Eggplants are just now beginning to come in. Look for these new items both on the CSA online marketplace and at our Saturday farmers’ market booths in Princeton, Murray, and Paducah.
This week’s highlighted vegetable is the “Eggplant” or “aubergine” (as you will see it referred to in some European recipes). Eggplant is related to the other Solanaceous or “sun-loving” vegetables (tomato, potato, and pepper) and likewise excels in the warm hot days of summer. This year we are growing three varieties, “Casper” a solid white tender variety, “Listada de Gandia” a beautiful purple-and-white striped heirloom, and “Ping Tung” a long purple style from Asia. We hope that you are able to experiment with them all and tell us your favorites. Feedback on the varieties we choose to grow is something we love to hear from our customers.

As always, thanks for your ongoing support of our farm. We are dedicated to bringing sustainably grown, healthy vegetables to Western Kentucky. We couldn’t do it without you.
Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

Market News

Seems like every year about this time, the whole town suddenly realizes that summer is almost over and the new school year is almost upon us. I’ve got two girls in school, but even if I didn’t this community is based far more on the academic year than the calendar one. Even though we might have the hottest few days of the summer ahead of us, it’s time to start thinking about cool season school uniforms, waiting outside for the busses, and trying to keep packed lunches hot.

The new school year brings new people to town, and new ALG customers. Welcome, all of you! We’ve already seen quite a few new faces these past few weeks. If you ever have any questions about how our market operates, please don’t hesitate to shoot me an email or talk with me during Thursday pickups. The new year also changes existing household routines, so it’s easy to forget it’s Thursday and you’ve got an order waiting for you at Ben’s Bikes. I do make phone calls to everyone who hasn’t arrived by 7:30 and I’ve begun sending text message reminders even before that, and every week catch at least one person who has completely forgotten. I also get a lot of home phone answering machines, though, so now’s a good time to make sure you’ve got a mobile number on your account if you have one. You can change your contact info and several other account details on the Your Account page of the website.

When August draws near, I usually issue a warning that nearly all of the favorite summer veggies are about to be in short supply. Once it gets really hot for long stretches, many plants just shut down flower production, and without flowers, there are no fruit. So, when the hot still days of August roll around there is often a sudden decline in tomatoes, beans, squash, peppers, and pretty much everything but okra. This year, though, we might be ok. It’s not been particularly hot, and there has been just enough rain to keep things from getting too dry. If we stay lucky and the trend holds for a few more weeks, the bounty we have now just might be with us right into fall.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Fresh Corn Harvest for July 28th

Market News

Hello!
It’s a rarity for Fresh Harvest to offer fresh sweet corn, but we have a truck load available this week. Vida Haynes has been a customer with Fresh Harvest for many years and has become a farmer in Bell Buckle, TN. Her corn will be picked Wednesday morning, so it will be super fresh. I’m not sure of the best way to freeze corn, but Google knows. If you know a tried and true method of freezing corn, pass it along and I’ll post it tomorrow night.

This from Vida:
“Tender Sweet Corn – A mix of Ambrosia and Peaches and Cream, you will want to eat this corn every night off the cob and put some away in the freezer. Grown organically in Bell Buckle, TN. The early maturities have been shared with friends around the farm and everyone has loved it – since most everyone around here has a garden, it means a lot when we get an A+ from the locals.

The farm has hundreds of acres of row crops – corn, soy beans and wheat, plus 175 Angus cows and 6 broiler houses.”

There are lots of veggies available including new varieties of peppers, tomatoes and potatoes. All of which goes great with corn.

This is really and truly the last week for blueberries. Bloomy Rind is on vacation, so no cheese until next week.

The Peach Truck has freestone peaches this week. They will be set up next to us throughout the peach season.

Dozen Bakery cookies and breads, eggs, granola, honey, and coffee are in abundance.

Hemp Honey and Sorghum are available under Honey.

You have until Tuesday night to place your order.
Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!
