Market News
Hello!
I neglected to list Cherry Tomatoes on Sunday, but they’re up there now! Should have at least 13 pints.
Lots of options still up for grabs including shiitake mushrooms, hamburger patties and lots of veggies.
The Market will remain open until Tuesday evening for you to place an order for this week.
Here is some information on how Fresh Harvest works.
*Orders can be placed without receiving the Sunday email. I try to open the Market between 7 and 8pm on Sunday. Sometimes I run a little late. Just go to the website: http://freshharvest.locallygrown.net/welcome to see if the Market is open.
*If you see an item as Sold Out, write in the Comment section at check out that you would like that item if more becomes available. We’ll try our best to add it to your order.
*PayPal payments have to be manually added to your account. There will be a delay to crediting your account due to me needing to take time to do the bookkeeping. I also have to go to each account with cash or check payments. These are sometimes delayed by procrastination or being busy. You can still place an order even though it may cause your account to be “overdrawn”. There is no penalty for going into the minus column. Sometimes I’m a little slow in getting to the bank to make deposits, but it eventually happens.
• If you recruit a new customer to Fresh Harvest and they open an account with a $50 deposit, we will credit your account $10 for each new customer who signs up. They will need to tell me your name, so that I can credit your account. Word of mouth has been our best advertising. Any help that you can provide is greatly appreciated.
• Every week, we leave orders at the church for customers who cannot arrive at Trinity before 6pm. This has worked well for those who have difficulty with the 4-6pm window. Please let me know if you need me to leave your order at the church.
• The bag that you receive each week is to be brought back with your next order. We have been negligent in telling new customers how this works. Don’t feel bad if you return multiple bags, it happens all the time.
• We’re into reusing and recycling. Our clean egg cartons, honey jars, paper and plastic bags, berry containers are some of the items that we can reuse. If we can’t reuse the returned items, we’ll recycle them.
• We do guarantee everything that we sell. If you ever have a problem, please let us know and we will credit your account.
• If there are other products or growers that you think should be a part of Fresh Harvest, please let me know.
Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!
If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.

Winnsboro, TX: Online Market is Open
Good morning again,
New to the market this week are apples from the The Oren Wooden Apple Orchard in Pikeville, TN. Although, we pride ourselves in all things local, the summer heat had left us with meager fruit selections, so we leapt at the chance to bring these to you fresh from the orchard. They are full of flavor!
Find more Fall favorites such as sweet potatoes & ornamental gourds this week as well. Ten Oaks Farm has added their line of homemade bath products & I can personally testify to how luxurious all these are!
Happy shopping & have a great week!!

Market News
Tomorrow’s holiday always sparks discussions of indigenous peoples and colonization. I’d like to plant an idea with you: think about all of the wonderful indigenous foods of North America, many of which have fallen into obscurity. See if you can find some to add to your diet this fall, even if it’s just to try something new for one single meal. Native plants are almost always a better choice to grow than species and varieties not adapted to our environment, but growers won’t plant them if there’s not a demand. Here’s one interesting list to get you started, and you’ll recognize some of them from the ALG listings throughout the year: 20 Native North American Foods with Stories to Tell.
This week I’ll be traveling out of state, so I’ll be leaving our Thursday market here in the hands of our many capable regular volunteers while I’m gone. However, Doug’s Salmon keeps his fish at my house in a freezer and I bring his sales in to market for him. Since I’ll be gone the fish will not be available to purchase, but the good news is Doug is back from his summer fishing expedition to Alaska and has restocked the freezer, so there will be plenty to go around when I get back.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!
Other Area Farmers Markets
The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park, and Wednesday evenings downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is back as well, Saturdays from 9 to 1, and you can watch for weekly news here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County farmers market is held every Saturday 8 to noon in downtown Watkinsville. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on Saturdays from 9 to 2pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from 11 to 3pm. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
Magney Legacy Ridge Farm: CSA #28
Dear CSA-ers,
This week’s preassembled bag will contain Spring Mix, Romaine Head Lettuce, Kale, Eggplant (the last this year), Radishes, Cherry Tomatoes and Acorn Squash (Amish Grown). For those of you placing custom orders, you may do so between now and Tuesday evening on the website at: http://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market
This is the last week to order your Farm to Table dinner tickets. If you are a year-round member you are invited to come for free. We are gearing up and finalizing details to our menu this week. Here are our plans currently: We will have gluten free options. Ray and I are making my Grandmothers marinade with local honey for Flank Steaks which Ray will grill for us that evening. I will be making salad with our wonderful Spring Mix and our own veggies. Caroline will be making a Butternut Squash Bisque. Swiss Chard will be one of our veggie sides. Hannah is coming home next weekend and we are going to experiment with an apple and kohlrabi pie. This weekend I have been raiding our local thrift shops to get enough dishes for our event. I thought this might be difficult, but it has turned out to be enjoyable adventure. The mismatched place settings for our dinner should make the tables quaint and fun.
Some history: When we farmed in Georgia, our Farm to Table was one of our beloved events. Since we rented land at that time, we did not have a kitchen on the farm. So, we had to use some ingenuity and repurposed a camper trailer as a resource for kitchen needs. It also provided the electricity to keep crock pots warm. The meat and veggies were grilled. These are fond memories for me, as we prepared food and dined under the twinkle lights in Augusta with the farm as ambiance. I am so looking forward to making new memories with YOU, my Farmily, here in Kentucky. We hope that you will join us on November 1st to come tour our farm and have a family style dinner with us. Tickets will go out in the mail at the end of this week. Or if you have a bag of veggies delivered, then they will be attached to your bag.
As always, we thank you and your family for your support of our farm. We wish you all a wonderful week and look forward to seeing you on Thursday.
Angela and the Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team
