Siloam Springs, AR: Online Market is Open!
What a stormy night! All is well at my house and I’m very thankful. We have no power or cell service where I live so apologies for opening late. I came to town to get things up and running. The east side of Siloam has quite a bit of damage. Keep all the electric department employees in your prayers. I’m sure they’ve been out working all night and know they are still working now.
Perennial Gardens will be at the pickup with items to sell. There will be some nice stocking stuffers for kids and some house plants.
Thankful our community is ok today even after sustaining damage from the storm.
Have a great week and see you Saturday!

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm: CSA #29
Dear CSA-ers,
This week’s preassembled bag will contain Collards, Garnet Mustards, Green Tomatoes, Lovelock Head Lettuce, Carrots, Sweet Potatoes (Amish Grown) and Cilantro. Custom Orders may be placed between now and Tuesday evening on the website at: https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market
There’s just one more weekend for Farmers’ Market this year, but CSA is just getting started for the Fall season! Our cool season crops are starting to look healthy and tunnel turn-over and planting are our goals for the coming week. This Friday we pulled the eggplant tunnel, so last week’s bag was the last time you will see eggplant until next summer. Other summer marginal vegetables like arugula, winter spinach, carrots, and radishes are just now starting to perform.
The ebb and flow of varieties is the very nature of seasonal eating. Many people have lost this connection with the land and local agriculture. Grocery stores import freely from the Southern Hemisphere to create produce departments that reflect very little seasonality at all. For some people, the changes in vegetable selection from month to month with the CSA is strange at first. Yet eating seasonally means eating only the freshest vegetables, and over time you may start to feel a little bit of that connection with the land come back. That’s our hope, anyway.
Our featured vegetable this week is Garnet Mustard. Garnet Mustard is a spicy leaf vegetable that should be cooked for best enjoyment. It is a beautiful deep purple color due to rich concentrations of anthocyanins, a group of antioxidant compounds the plant uses to protect itself from cold. This first round will have some cosmetic bug-holing due to the peskersome flea beetles, but with the onset of colder weather we expect leaf quality to keep going up. This is the only one of our three mustard greens we brought back this year, which is testament to how much we love it. Enjoy it sautéed, steamed, or cooked down by itself or with any of our other greens. A very knowledgeable customer once told us that collards are best prepared with mustards as the flavors balance each other. Regardless of how you prepare them, we sincerely hope you enjoy these and all the other vegetables in your bag this week. And, as always, we thank you for your continued support of our farm.
Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team
Middle Tennessee Locally Grown: Time to Order Fresh Local Farm Products!
Middle Tennessee Locally Grown market
Farm News of the Week
Well… not a “vacation” exactly. Albert Lynn wishes to thank the market customers for a great first season, and says he will see us in the spring. His fields are ready for a rest now, in preparation for spring planting, which is really just “around the corner.” However, he has recently harvested a great supply of sweet potatoes and should have them available for several months. It’s time to eat our fall and winter veggies, folks!
Solace Farm has added several new cuts of Scottish Highland beef to the market. I’m sorry we don’t have any photos of this delicious meat to show.
Dogwood Valley Greenhouse has added a package of 20 Natural Pine Cones from White Pines. These will be perfect for making fall or Christmas themed decorations. We will also open our Christmas wreath and kissing ball orders next week; a $20 deposit will put your name on the list for a late December delivery.

Market News
Some of our northern growers might be getting their first frost this week. Even here in Athens the temperatures are forecast to fall almost to the 30s Thursday morning. Many of our growers have greenhouses and high tunnels that will let them extend the season, some all winter long, but for much of the gardens that supply our area markets, the summer produce are on their very last legs and the cool weather crops will take over.
Fall seems to be the traditional time for wanting to go visit a farm, maybe to pick apples or to find a good pumpkin, or to get lost in a corn maze. It’s true that most if not all of the agro-tourism spots nearby are conventional farms, but don’t let that stop you from paying them a visit, especially if you have children (or can borrow some for the day). So many kids think that their food supply begins at the grocery store, and farms are just something that they read about in picture books. Take them out and show them that farms are real things, that they’re worth visiting, and that they are near where they live. Farms shouldn’t be exotic places, relegated to storyland places like “The Dell” and “California”.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!
Other Area Farmers Markets
The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park, and Wednesday evenings downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is back as well, Saturdays from 9 to 1, and you can watch for weekly news here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County farmers market is held every Saturday 8 to noon in downtown Watkinsville. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on Saturdays from 9 to 2pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from 11 to 3pm. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Market News
Hello!
It seems like it was just yesterday that we planted 2700 strawberry plants, but they already need weeding. I’ve learned that there are certain weeds that are winter hardy and they just like hanging out with the berry plants all winter long. Weeding makes for a good time to listen to a book. The current “weeds” are watermelon seedlings and thorny amaranth which would die on their own if there was ever a hard freeze. We’ll start weeding them anyway.
Our sweet potatoes are in the best shape ever. They are washed and ready to go. We’ve given literally a half ton to the Nashville Food Project. I hope that their recipients (and cooks) don’t tire of the taters.
Wedge Oak Farm will have a limited number of turkeys available for Thanksgiving. These are locally grown heritage turkeys. You will need to pick them up at their farm in Lebanon or at the Richland Farmers’ Market. You can contact Wedge Oak for size and price at: wedgeoak@gmail.com Unfortunately, I will be out of town that week at the beach in N. Captiva, Florida. I believe that’s 41 days, if my math is correct.
Chestnuts from Caney Fork Farm will be available this week. Here’s a link on how to cook them: https://www.thespruceeats.com/how-to-roast-chestnuts-1808310
The Bloomy Rind is back this week with butter, Cowboy Coffee cheese and other delights.
Lots of fine meat items from Wedge Oak and Bear Creek Farms.
Dozen Bakery cookies and breads, eggs, granola, honey, and coffee are all in abundance.
You have until Tuesday night to place your order.
Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!
If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.
