Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Fresh Harvest - Late Additions

Market News

Hello!
There are late additions to the Market including arugula, microgreens, pea shoots and elderberry syrup. Plenty of meats, cheeses, fresh ginger and other delights still available.

The Market will remain open until Tuesday evening for you to place an order for this week.

Here is some information on how Fresh Harvest works.
*Orders can be placed without receiving the Sunday email. I try to open the Market between 7 and 8pm on Sunday. Sometimes I run a little late. Just go to the website: http://freshharvest.locallygrown.net/welcome to see if the Market is open.
*If you see an item as Sold Out, write in the Comment section at check out that you would like that item if more becomes available. We’ll try our best to add it to your order.
*PayPal payments have to be manually added to your account. There will be a delay to crediting your account due to me needing to take time to do the bookkeeping. I also have to go to each account with cash or check payments. These are sometimes delayed by procrastination or being busy. You can still place an order even though it may cause your account to be “overdrawn”. There is no penalty for going into the minus column. Sometimes I’m a little slow in getting to the bank to make deposits, but it eventually happens.
• If you recruit a new customer to Fresh Harvest and they open an account with a $50 deposit, we will credit your account $10 for each new customer who signs up. They will need to tell me your name, so that I can credit your account. Word of mouth has been our best advertising. Any help that you can provide is greatly appreciated.
• Every week, we leave orders at the church for customers who cannot arrive at Trinity before 6pm. This has worked well for those who have difficulty with the 4-6pm window. Please let me know if you need me to leave your order at the church.
• The bag that you receive each week is to be brought back with your next order. We have been negligent in telling new customers how this works. Don’t feel bad if you return multiple bags, it happens all the time.
• We’re into reusing and recycling. Our clean egg cartons, honey jars, paper and plastic bags, berry containers are some of the items that we can reuse. If we can’t reuse the returned items, we’ll recycle them.
• We do guarantee everything that we sell. If you ever have a problem, please let us know and we will credit your account.
• If there are other products or growers that you think should be a part of Fresh Harvest, please let me know.

Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!

If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.

Market News

Looks like it’s going to be a beautiful week, just the sort that the cool weather leafy greens love. I’ve fallen behind on my garden plans, but it’s not too late to get some seedlings in the ground for eating all through the winter. This coming weekend, for sure!

This coming Friday night, the Athens Area Homeless Shelter is hosting their annual Harvest fund raising event. I think everyone knows the homelessness remains a severe problem, both as a society and as a community. The AAHS plays a key role in helping women and children here in Athens, and every dollar gets put to good use. A ticket to the event gets you an evening of live music, wine+beer+cocktails, delicious food, and a silent auction full of donations from many of your favorite local business, artists, and even some ALG growers. You can find more information here: https://www.helpathenshomeless.org/harvest-for-the-homeless

ALG operates year-round, even after all of the other area markets close, but there is one week we take off every year: the week of Thanksgiving. We will be open as usual the rest of November, so if there are things you’d like for your Thanksgiving meals, you’ll need to plan ahead and order them early. Naturally, I’ve get asked if I know of any local growers with turkeys available. We have in years past had ALG growers raising turkeys, but most everyone has stopped trying. Domestic turkeys, even heritage breeds, have a really hard time with the heat and humidities of our summers, and so take an enormous amount of labor to raise well. As the holiday gets closer, I may get a few leads on a handful of locally raised heritage turkeys, and if so, I’ll share them with you.

And thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park, and Wednesday evenings downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is back as well, Saturdays from 9 to 1, and you can watch for weekly news here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County farmers market is held every Saturday 8 to noon in downtown Watkinsville. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on Saturdays from 9 to 2pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from 11 to 3pm. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #31

Dear CSA-ers,

This week’s preassembled bag will contain Spring Mix, Butternut Squash (Amish Grown), Collards, Carrots, Mixed Tomatoes, and a Head Lettuce. Custom orders may be placed on the website between now and Tuesday evening on the website at: http://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market

This past week was wrought with successes and calamities. We always seem to find that adaptability is the key to moving forward. On the front of successes, Thursday’s CSA was a race against the chilling winds of a cold front and the onslaught of pint-sized traffic hazards known as “trick-or-treaters.” The team worked together and completed harvest and then distributed the CSAs as planned. No children were harmed in the process, and we hope that all of you who received vegetable bags this past week were pleased with the fresh and healthy vegetables therein.
This week’s calamity was the record setting hard freeze we experienced Thursday night and Friday morning. Though we expect November to bring freezing temperatures, a 8 hour sustained low under 29 F is unusual for the first day of the month. Unfortunately this caught us a bit off guard. We were able to get the majority of the lettuce plot protected under frost cloth, but our two brassica plots were left without protection. Brassicas are fairly frost hardy, but in truth, we did sustain significant foliar damage to many of the plants. Sweetness of the leaves should go up with the frost whip, though the visual leaf quality may be down. Few crops were outright lost, but this is a substantial and disappointing set back. Most tragically, a near-ready Brazilian variety of broccoli was all but killed back. That variety had seemed like a great bet when it was 90 degrees at the start of October, but such is the nature of farming.
We’d like to close with a bright note on the success of our farm to table dinner. It was a lovely night and we enjoyed hosting all of you who were able to attend this year. Coordinating an event of such magnitude with the facilities available to us represents a huge triumph of teamwork for everyone involved. Stacy, Rachel, Caroline, Patrick, Hannah, Eric, Grandma Sue, Ray, and Angela were all instrumental in the various components of making this come together. Farm events are something we would like to do more of in the future, and if you didn’t make it to this one, we would love to have you at the next.

None of what we do would be possible without you, our CSA customers. Through the difficult times and the great ones, we thank you for supporting our endeavors towards local, sustainable agriculture. We are so grateful to be a part of your community.

Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team
