Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #33

Dear CSA-ers,
This week’s Preassembled Bag will include Bok Choy/Tatsoi Mix, Spring Mix, Lacinato Kale, Pie Pumpkins (Amish Grown), plum radishes, and carrots. Custom orders may be placed between now and Tuesday evening on the website at: http://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market

REMEMBER NO DELIVERIES THE WEEK OF THANKSGIVING.

Wow! Last week hit some record setting lows! We had a chance to survey the farm while doing harvest for CSA. Regrettably, some vegetables were irreparably damaged earlier than we had hoped. In particular, the head lettuces were hit especially hard. Collectively this will probably mean that the remaining 4 CSAs will be somewhat similar in composition. However, we are happy to report that we anticipate being able to fill them. In some ways, events like this early deep freeze help us learn. We’ve collected a lot of information about the absolute endurances of vegetable varieties as well as learning what does and doesn’t work for frost-proofing. That information can only truly be obtained by experience and we will use it to become a better farm in the future.
The vegetable we’d like to highlight this week is Tatsoi. Tatsoi is fairly new to us, but hails from Asia where it is used much in the way we would spinach. It is delicious raw in salads, cooked down like a Southern green, or as an authentic addition to stir-fry. Tatsoi has a great crunch to it, and differs from bok-choy in that it does not have the “bulb” formed from enlarged leaf bases. Tatsoi is superlative in its Vitamin C content among leafy vegetables and has a smattering of vital trace minerals as well. We hope you are able to stay healthy this cold and flu season with the help of this delicious green!
As always, we thank you for your enduring support of our local farm. It is with your help that we hope to continue to grow.

Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

Berea Gardens:  It's cold!

Hi Friends,

Last Wednesday morning our temperature dropped to 9* putting an end to the availability of some of our offerings. Still, we have a few things for you this week, including our half-bushel boxes of potatoes for you holiday needs. Keep warm.

Champaign, OH:  Alice's Restaurant

This song is called "Alice’s Restaurant
“It’s about Alice, and the
Restaurant, but “Alice’s Restaurant” is not the name of the restaurant,
That’s just the name of the song
That’s why I call the song “Alice’s Restaurant.”

You can get anything you want at Alice’s restaurant
You can get anything you want at Alice’s restaurant
Walk right in, it’s around the back
Just a half a mile from the railroad track
You can get anything you want at Alice’s restaurant…
(Arlo Guthrie)

Good morning on this sunshine filled Sunday morning…

Your market manager is working, this morning, on your market, on my own market orders, on my Thanksgiving menu, dividing up all the items that I assign to all who attend Thanksgiving dinner, arranging seating plans, and set up for desserts, food, cocktails…well, you get the picture.

I love tradition. I love Thanksgiving, and I love that it is also my daughter’s birthday, and even though she is turning 26, and off on her own, she still comes home, now with her long term boyfriend in tow, and we celebrate just as hard as if I was still planning her elaborate birthday parties of her youth.

Another one of my personal traditions is to watch the movie, Alice’s Restaurant, during my prep times in the kitchen, and then making sure I listen to Alice’s Restaurant, at noon, on Thanksgiving day, on WYSO. I know, I could easily pop it up on social media, but I have been listening to it, on the radio, since I was in my teens…and, I have to stay true to my traditions.

Anyway…you can get whatever you want…at our market…now, go, pop on Alice’s Restaurant, and get in ordering mode for your own traditions…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

CLG:  Opening Bell: Cheese, Coffee, Sweet Taters, Beef!

Good afternoon!

This will be our last market of November since we won’t have market the Friday after thanksgiving. Stock up on all your favorites. And don’t forget to try the frozen ground chicken frames from Bradford Valley Farm for your dogs. Mine go crazy for it.

Bonus gift! This week as you make your order, add all the things you will need and when your total is $50 or more, add a half pint of jam or jelly from Maria to your shopping cart ($5.75 value). When you check out on Friday, you’ll get that jar for free! Happy thanksgiving from CLG.

We will have freshly made smoked paprika on the extra table this Friday. Isn’t that fancy!?!

Black walnuts and pecans now available for all your holiday baking needs. And if eggs are not available when you order, plan to pick up early on Friday. I anticipate having several dozen on the extras table, depending on how the hens produce this week.

Maria will be joining us this Friday with a specialty extras table that includes not only the usual goodies, but also spinach dip, boxes of chocolate covered cherries, and this year’s first WASSAIL! (available by the cup or different sized container).
Come early, though, because she has to leave by 5:15 due to family obligations!

Remember to feed our feathered friends during the colder months when fewer bugs are available. We will have suet cakes for birds on the extras table every Friday for only $1.

We’ve been having a lot of excellent items on the extra table lately. Earlier shoppers get the best selection. We are normally ready for customers to start arriving around 3 PM if you happen to be out and in the area. Just text me to see if we’re ready.

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Four instance, type in the word “sale” and see what pops up. We have almost 400 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

Please check your email a few minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thanks!

THIS AND THAT

I trust each of you are rejoicing in this glorious day after the dreary weather we’ve experienced this week. And I hope and pray each of you are counting your blessings as we are deep into the Thanksgiving Season this year. This past week I found myself thankful for Elderberry Syrup and Chickweed Tea. Diligent use of Market natural remedies kept your newsletter editor from having to see a physician!

So this is our LAST order cycle before Thanksgiving. We here at the Market are thankful there are plenty of good healthy greens and root vegetables available. And if you’re ok with traditional sweets this is the last week Mrs. Laura’s pre-ordered pies can be ordered. If you’ve missed it she will deliver fresh pies to the Nursery for pickup the day before Thanksgiving.

GROWER NOTES

We have the best Growers in the Wiregrass! Please learn more about them on our Grower Page.

AVALON FARMS: The Kinston Sweet Onions have reached their season end and are starting to sprout. The Creole Reds are still available. Pungent onions, like the Creoles, store better.

Turnips and watermelon radishes are relisted.

Newly listed are Winter Squash.  Georgia Candy Roasters (top). 3 kinds of kabocha squash, Sunshine (mid left),  Black Forest (mid right) and Shokochi Green (lower 2) and a small spaghetti squash, Angel Hair (not pictured). I had planned to bring the winter squash to the farmer’s market last Saturday,  but family issues took me out of town. But here they are finally!

LAURA’S CONFECTIONS: With only 12 days left we’re getting down to the Thanksgiving wire and I would gently remind everyone that this is the final ordering cycle for holiday pies.  Preorder pies will be delivered to Dothan Nurseries at 3pm the day before Thanksgiving.

Christmas will be upon us in 6 1/2 weeks. Each year I make, what others have described as melt-in-your-mouth peanut brittle and am always on the lookout for tins. If you have any that are essentially collecting dust I’d be interested in purchasing them. They must be rust-free and I pay $.25 per tin. Generally speaking, they must hold a pound of brittle or measure approximately 7? × 2 1/2". Thank you for your wonderful patronage and trust you place in me to provide you with the highest quality, delectable desserts to which I could ever aspire.

Peanut-Brittle

DANNY’S GREENS: Danny is taking a couple of weeks for his new planting to mature. His products will be available again Nov. 30 and he’s hopeful his carrots and onions will be ready to list too!

Today…a word from your market manager…

First, if you are thinking about dinner rolls for your Thanksgiving holiday, consider your favorite market manager, and hippie bakestress. You can order my rolls, for this week’s market, pop them into your freezer, and they will be lovely, and like just baked, when you pull them out for your guests…

Just a thought on this Saturday morning.

And, don’t stop with dinner rolls…our market has so many, many offerings for your holiday needs, and beyond…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
