Market News

Happy Labor Day, everyone! I’ve known many hard working laborers in my day, but probably none that work harder than our farmers. Please send a few extra thanks their way next time you’re able.

I don’t have anything specific for the newsletter this week, so I’ll let you get right into ordering. Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park, and Wednesday evenings downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is back as well, Saturdays from 9 to 1, and you can watch for weekly news here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County farmers market is held every Saturday 8 to noon in downtown Watkinsville. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on Saturdays from 9 to 2pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from 11 to 3pm. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Fresh Harvest for September 1st

Market News

Hello!
We have lots of watermelons this week, fruitarians rejoice!. The Hershbergers have an heirloom variety called Rattlesnake which apparently gets to be a very large watermelon. We tried a $7 melon (Large) and it was very sweet with very few seeds. Abraham weighs his watermelons to determine the price for each one. This week he has 7 different sizes. Since I list all of Abe’s items on the Market page, it challenges me to come up with different names for the various sizes of melons. It starts out pretty easy with small, medium, etc., but with 3 sizes bigger than Jumbo, I had to search for synonyms. I settled on Colossal, Mammoth and Gargantuan. It was a tough call on what to call the biggest melon, but I went with Gargantuan. My melons on the other hand are small to very small Sugar Baby, smaller than a soccer ball. If you ever get an under or over ripe melon, please let me know and I’ll credit you.

Rocky Glade Farm (Jim & Julie Vaughn) is back this week with lots of peppers as well as broccoli, cabbage, kale and other delights. Rocky Glade has an interesting new item called Mashed Potato Acorn Squash (See their description in Recipes). The Vaughn’s sons Dylem and Caleb have listed eggs from their chickens.

Pig and Leaf Farm has some beautiful bouquets this week featuring dahlias. Last week, they had some lovely eucalyptus in the bouquets which brought back memories of my flower growing days. I don’t think that I could ever get the darn eucalyptus seeds to germinate. They also have lettuce mix in 5 ounce bags.

The Hershbergers have 80 lbs. of heirloom tomatoes this week. Think about when winter comes and there are no local tomatoes until summer.

I am setting up in a different location at Trinity. There’s a big tree diagonally across from where I’ve been setting up, near Sharondale. It’s flat and has more shade.

Lots of fine items from Wedge Oak and Bear Creek Farms.

Dozen Bakery cookies and breads, eggs, granola, honey, and coffee are all in abundance.

You have until Tuesday night to place your order.
Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!

If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.

Recipes

Mashed Potato Acorn Squash
Mashed Potato Acorn is so named b/c you can cook and then cream the inside flesh and it resembles “mashed potatoes”. Great for those on low carb diets. You can of course also bake these and eat anyway you want to cook a traditional acorn squash, it has ghost white skin and off white flesh.

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #22

Dear CSA-ers,
This week’s preassembled bag will contain radishes, romaine, arugula, icebox melons, cherry tomatoes, oregano, and garlic. Custom orders may be placed between now and Tuesday evening on the website at https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market

The warm dry air and incessant wail of cicadas tell us that it is late summer here on the Magney Farm. Yet crisp mornings and the spicy fragrance of autumn asters in the air betray that Fall is just around the corner. September is what we call a “shoulder season,” the intersection point of two distinctly different seasons where the weather can go either way.
Historically, shoulder seasons have been our most difficult times for production. Summer vegetables are beginning to wind down, suffering from shorter day lengths and becoming erratic in their production. Autumn vegetables have yet to mature and struggle to get established while enduring the onslaught of high temperatures and peak pest insect populations. For this reason it is sometimes hard to put together CSAs during these shoulder seasons (if you were wondering, May is the equivalent shoulder season during Spring). Nevertheless, we are in a better position than we have ever been to face this time of year, thanks largely to a strong set of root crops.
The featured vegetable this week is garden arugula, known in Europe as “roquette” or “rocket.” Arugula can be eaten as salad or cooked as a green. Its flavor is tart and peppery, and it is particularly rich in Vitamin K and the mineral Calcium. This is the earliest we’ve dared to try a rotation of garden arugula, and likewise, this round will show some insect damage. Its flavor is nonetheless excellent and it will be double washed at the time when it gets to your door. Sometimes cosmetic imperfection of vegetables is the trade off for growing them organically. We hope that you understand and will enjoy this most piquant green.
As always, we thank you for your enduring support of our farm. Your support makes possible our growth as both a business and a part of your community. We invite you to connect with us and share your recipes, input, and creations. We can be tagged on facebook with “@Magney Legacy Ridge Farm” if you’ve liked and followed our page. Best to you and those you hold dear in this coming week!

Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team
