Market News

It doesn’t exactly feel like it yet, but there are signs that summer is winding down. Sure, the equinox tomorrow is the official start of Fall, but the weather hasn’t really gotten the memo yet. Still, the nights will now be longer than the days, and the plants pick up on that really quick. Take the arugula, for example — there are a couple different listings for that zesty green. It might have some heat of its own, but it’s not fond of summer at all. Right on its tail we’ll see bountiful spinach, cabbages, broccoli again, and other cool season crops. The summer items will hold on as long as they can — we’ve still got over a month until frost will put an end to those (except for what our growers have planted in high tunnels and greenhouses). So, for the next few weeks we’ll get to enjoy the best of both seasons! It’s exciting times in the kitchen, for sure.

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park, and Wednesday evenings downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is back as well, Saturdays from 9 to 1, and you can watch for weekly news here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County farmers market is held every Saturday 8 to noon in downtown Watkinsville. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on Saturdays from 9 to 2pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from 11 to 3pm. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

Hello!
This time of year there are usually a couple of noteworthy events that affect my farming. Towards the end of August, I begin to feel somewhat bedraggled; the brain and body are running at a slower speed. I tell myself that there has got to be more tasks that I can be doing indoors. USUALLY, in September there is a cool day or two that rejuvenates my energy and enthusiasm for farming. It looks like I will have to wait until October for one of those cool days. The other event is the planting of strawberry plugs. I grow strawberries as an annual, planting them NOW and pulling up the plants at the end of the harvest in June. I will be picking up 2000+ strawberry plants tomorrow and they should be in the ground on Tuesday, unless it rains. I know, I’m hilarious! Keep your fingers crossed for the harvest in April/May. The planting of the berries always signifies to me that I will continue to be farming in 2020.

Growing Together, composed of the refugee farmers that Tally is helping acclimate to farming to Tennessee weather, has a large variety of offerings this week. The Hershbergers are offering a new item to Fresh Harvest, purslane. I, of course, had to Google purslane to learn what it is and how it is used. It is said to have a lemony flavor and can be used in many ways. It also has nutritional and medicinal value according to Google. There are plenty of green beans and tomatoes offered this week.

I am setting up in a different location at Trinity. There’s a big tree diagonally across from where I’ve been setting up, near Sharondale. It’s flat and has more shade.

Lots of fine meat items from Wedge Oak and Bear Creek Farms.

Dozen Bakery cookies and breads, eggs, granola, honey, and coffee are all in abundance.

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #25


Dear CSA-ers,

This week’s preassembled bag will contain Tuscan Kale, Baby Beets (without tops), Casper Eggplant, Mixed Sweet Peppers, Mixed Tomatoes, Kohlrabi, and an Herb. For those of you placing custom orders, you may do so between now and Tuesday evening on the website at: http://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market

Dry, dry, dry! We have seen barely a drop of rain for the past two months. Some of you have asked at markets how this has been affecting us, and that’s a complicated question. In Western Kentucky, very seldom is the weather “ideal.” It seems there’s always something that is in excess, and something else that is lacking. Right now, the extraordinarily dry air and cooler nights are favorable to the overall health of most vegetables. Fungal maladies largely disappear in dry weather, and the leaf quality of new growth has been excellent. The downside is the cost of daily irrigation, and much difficulty getting direct seed crops to germinate. Solving some problems and finding others is very much the way of farming. Everything has its pros and cons.
This week, there is much ado to do with the Lyon County Farm to Table Dinner to benefit the Hope Food Bank taking place Tuesday. Our farm is supplying greens and table decorations, and team members will be assisting in the set up on Monday. We may see some of you there! Please note that this is different than the Farm to Table Dinner that we are hosting on the Magney Legacy Ridge Farm November 1st specifically for you, our CSA customers. Tickets for that event are available on the online market and will be until Mid-October. If you’re planning on attending, we encourage you to get those tickets early so that we know the final headcount and begin putting together the menu. We’re very much looking forward to seeing you!

This week’s featured vegetable is Tuscan Kale, Dinosaur Kale, Cavolo Nero, Flat Black Cabbage, or Lacinato Kale. This vegetable goes by many interesting names, but they all refer to the same lineage of Italian kales with deep green, flattened leaves with gentle savoying (in plants, “savoyed” refers to the bumpy texture). Chefs love Tuscan Kale for its ease of preparation, rich color when cooked, and deep flavor. For Autumn soups, it cannot be bested. Like other kales, it has extraordinary nutritional density, as it is high in Vitamin K, trace minerals, and dietary fiber. We invite you to enjoy this excellent vegetable in many different preparations throughout the season.

Good afternoon!
We are ecstatic at Cedar Rock Ridge, as our organic garlic has won a 1st Place blue ribbon, and BEST IN SHOW at this year’s Faulkner County fair. Even more amazing is that this is the second time in three years it has won best in show. Out of the hundreds of entries, the judges saw something extraordinary in the garlic. We think it’s pretty special too and will be offering potted garlic plants again this year so you can experience this amazing and un-named strain of garlic in your own gardens. Only $1 per plant.

If you are out in the woods much, you may catch the passing scent of ripe persimmon fruit. Carissa and I collected about 30 this afternoon, and she baked delicious persimmon tart for dessert. Persimmon has a delicious flavor and creamy texture that should be experienced during the short season.

We’ve been having a lot of excellent items on the extra table lately. Earlier shoppers get the best selection. We are normally ready for customers to start arriving around 3 PM if you happen to be out and in the area. Just text me to see if we’re ready.

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Four instance, type in the word “sale”and see what pops up. We have over 575 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)
