Market News
I don’t have any new news for you so I’ll let you get right on to ordering. We’re in for some cold weather this week, enough to bite back some of the thinner leafy greens. Most of our growers will counter that with row covers or keeping the hoop houses closed up tight, or even providing some external heat. I know a few growers have wood heaters they deploy in weather like this, just to keep the ice away from the more sensitive crops, or the summer crops they’re managing to keep going under protection. Stay warm yourself!
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!
Other Area Farmers Markets
Most other area markets are starting to close down for the season or move to winter hours. The Athens Farmers Market will return in the Spring. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is closed for the season, and you can watch for their return here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours now on Saturdays from 1-4pm. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Good afternoon!
This Friday we’ll have Doña Estela’s amazing homemade Tamales! She will make them Friday morning and have them at market Friday afternoon. They will be 5 for $7 in 3 flavors: Pork, Chicken, or Jalapeño & Cheese. To place an order, please add a note to your CLG order, or text me at 501-339-1039. Delicious with sides of refried beans and rice, topped with a bit of salsa and sour cream.
Our mild weather continues, and with it, a good mix of greens and vegetables we normally don’t see you this time of year. Take advantage of it while you can.
The new flock of 15 has started laying at Cedar Rock Ridge so look for these free-range Eggs on the Extras table this Friday.
We are expecting to have Cheese from White River Creamery next week, so stay tuned.
Flying C Ranch has added several new Beef products, including Stew Meat and Bones for broth. Their cattle are grass-fed until 120 days before processing, when they are fed locally ground grain which enhances meat tenderness and marbling.

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!
And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

Good afternoon.
The Wednesday Market is open for orders. Please place your order by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up between 3 and 6 p.m. Wednesday. See the website for this week’s product offerings. Here is the link: https://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market
Are you ready for the deep freeze that the forecasters are predicting for later on this week? It is supposed to get REALLY cold late Tuesday and early Wednesday, and some parts of North Georgia and the Atlanta Metro area may get freezing rain and/or snow. We just don’t know yet what is in store for us down here on the southside.
Occasionally, inclement weather interrupts our Wednesday Market plans. Please pay close attention to the weather this week, and if we make any changes to our delivery schedule, we will work very diligently to let our farmers and customers know.
Thank you for your support of locally grown agriculture and for choosing to buy locally. We’ll see you at the Market. In the meantime, we hope you stay warm and cozy!
Thanks,
Beverly

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm: Winter CSA #2
Dear CSA-ers,
Thank you for those of you who tried out the new system at magneyfarm.locallygrown.net last week. We appreciate your support so much and are happy to report that our first round of deliveries went smoothly. We’re so pleased to be able to offer you custom vegetable bags for delivery or local pick-up. We are up and running for our new credit card payment system, so give it a try. We are also exploring options for discounting a whole season buy-in, much like we did with CSA last year. The goal is to increase the value of our CSA for you, our customers and extended team members. Your support helps us grow organic agriculture and the overall health of the West Kentucky Region.
Despite the frosty conditions, life grows on beneath the protective coverings of our high tunnel greenhouses and outdoor frost cloths. Some of the vegetables we planted back in October are starting to come into their own. Notably, the Romanesco with its vivid chartreuse colour and unique fractal geometry are ready to harvest. Romanesco is most similar to cauliflower, with cooking and preparation being exactly the same. Though new to American markets, Romanesco traces its origins to Italy, where it was bred and developed more than 400 years ago. Romanesco, like its relatives Cauliflower and Broccoli, is high in Vitamin C and Vitamin K. With these Vitamins and many other minerals, all three of these vegetables are a great dietary choice for bolstering the immune system during these dreary winter months.
Again we’d like to invite you, our CSA members, to try out ordering from our new system. Simply create an account at
https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/user/signin?from=welcome
and begin by adding the items you want on The Market tab
http://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market.
During this interim period between Winter and Spring, we’re working to polish the system. We’re always happy to hear from you, and your input and suggestions help us to make this a better service for you. Again, thank you for your continued support. We look forward to growing you the healthiest, most delicious vegetables throughout the year to come!
Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Team
