Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  Winter CSA #4

Dear CSA-ers,

Can you feel it? Spring is coming. Daffodils are starting to poke up out of the Earth and though we’re still feeling cold temperatures, the swelling tree buds and prolific birdsong suggest that winter will be winding down soon. Through our winter interim period we will continue to offer the craft your own CSA at (https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market). For those of you who wish to receive the preassembled CSA, this week’s will feature: Caraflex Cabbage, Lovelock Lettuce, Spring Mix, Swiss Chard, Mustards and Green Onions.

This week we will begin Spring seeding on the farm. This is when we get our starter plants growing so that we can hit the ground running for Spring and Summer. We are also putting together the final details on how this year’s CSA will be modeled and sold. Like last year, we intend to offer a pricing discount for a whole season buy-in. So far we are pleased with the new system for building custom orders. If you, as our customers and extended team members, have any ideas or input regarding how you want CSA to work, now is the time to contact us! We love hearing from you, and your perspective helps us to build a better service.

A crop we will begin offering this week is our Caraflex Cabbage. Caraflex is a cone-shaped cabbage, of more modest proportions than that of a traditional round cabbage. The texture is tender and the flavor sweet. These traits will be all the better having come through such a cold winter. Caraflex is great for making cabbage wraps, eaten boiled, or used in soups. In general, cabbage is excellent for one’s digestive health as it is rich in dietary fiber with a low glycemic index.

As always, we thank you for your generous support of our farm. Please reach out if you have any suggestions as to how we can better serve you through our CSA program! We want to grow a strong and healthy community here in Western Kentucky, and it’s you who help us to do so!

Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

Champaign, OH:  Wish You Were Here

Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail…
(Wish You Were Here-Pink Floyd)

It’s dreary, I’m in one of those lazy Sunday hazes, and I’ve got acoustic Pink Floyd in the background.

Snow is predicted, and I’m all about just staying in, getting my market orders in, and not worrying about the rest of the week, or my weekly food. I love how easy this market makes the week!

If you are feeling as lazy as I feel, today, why not just lazily put in your order? We’ve been doing the food pick up gig way before the big box places started. And, there is no additional fee to use our market. And, you get the smiles and humor of your market managers, all while grabbing the local goodness, and keeping your hard earned money in our lovely local economy. Everyone wins from producer to consumer to the community to the local economy.

All that, just to say…wish you were here, if you have not already placed your order for the week…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Chocolate and Flowers Valentine Herbal Tea Get your valentine (or yourself) this blend of cacao husks with roses and hibiscus flowers, with a sweet and healthy-heart treat that is naturally delicious.

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: It’s spring, or at least the daffodils at Dogwood Valley Greenhouse think it is. I believe I’ve seen some red, red robins bobbin’ around among them too, but I’m sorry that I can’t add any of those to this year’s bouquets. I will have a limited number of daffodil bouquets available this week, and will do my best to fill all orders. But as always, the number of blooms available on Tuesdays is very weather-dependent. I’m actually thankful for the cooler weather, as 40’s and 50’s will prolong bloom a lot better than 60’s and 70’s. I’m hoping to have blooms for three weeks, so I suggest that you order early and often. If there are any unfilled orders this week, I will ask if you want me to fill your order next week instead. Enjoy this early breath of spring, as they smell so sweet inside your home!

You know spring is almost here when you see the primroses, pulmonarias, and woodland phlox beginning to show their colors. To tell the truth, these guys are jumping the gun just a wee bit, but we’re very happy to be able to add them back to the market. You know we’re still likely to get an ice storm sometime during February. Be sure to cover these beauties with a bedsheet or move to an unheated garage if the weather turns cold and/or nasty.

See you “On the Porch” at Quinn’s Mercantile Wednesday February 13th from 5:00 – 6:30pm, please contact me if you are unable to make delivery or are running late, please phone, email or text me so we can make arrangements to get your order to you.
