Heritage Farm :  We need your help!

Did you know that last week alone there were 4 meat recalls in the news for e-coli and salmonella? One of them was even from the Perdue organics chicken!!! Unfortunately we are seeing more and more of our market share drift back to these industrial producers as the general public is swayed by the misleading advertising and labeling of the industrial food manufacturers. That, combined with the fact that shoppers believe that anything with organic on it is good and safe makes the closing of more and more small farms seem like a given. The truth is that the industrial food chain is sick, full of lies and diseases and you are at risk every time you buy their meats. They may show you sunshine and grass on their slick marketing and labels but I’ll give you a 100.00 bill if you can find just ONE that will actually let you come see that pretty organic farm!!! Every week we come closer and closer to going in the red and having to shut our doors because of this consumer drift. We need your help! More than that we need your business to keep ours open. We don’t have Wall Street and the federal government behind us to keep us propped up while we send out false and misleading advertisements to bring you to the store. We can’t spend millions to make you believe were something were not so you will bring your dollars to our doorstep. We can’t sell it below cost and count on the USDA to prop us up financially. We can’t make ourselves trendy and the newest rave on the food circuit. All we can do is continue to grow and supply our products with the highest standards and provide good, clean and healthy foods for the consumers that want them. Please vote with your dollars and help us keep our doors open!

Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Last Call - Fresh Harvest

Market News

Hello!

Pig and Leaf Farm has added two choices of microgreens: Fiery Asian Mix and Hippie Salad Mix. Lots of great veggies still available.

The Market will remain open until Tuesday evening for you to place an order for this week.

Here is some information on how Fresh Harvest works.
*If you see an item as Sold Out, write in the Comment section at check out that you would like that item if more becomes available. We’ll try our best to add it to your order.
*PayPal payments have to be manually added to your account. There will be a delay to crediting your account due to me needing to take time to do the bookkeeping. I also have to go to each account with cash or check payments. These are sometimes delayed by procrastination or being busy. You can still place an order even though it may cause your account to be “overdrawn”. There is no penalty for going into the minus column. Sometimes I’m a little slow in getting to the bank to make deposits, but it eventually happens.
• If you recruit a new customer to Fresh Harvest and they open an account with a $50 deposit, we will credit your account $10 for each new customer who signs up. They will need to tell me your name, so that I can credit your account. Word of mouth has been our best advertising. Any help that you can provide is greatly appreciated.
• Every week, we leave orders at the church for customers who cannot arrive at Trinity before 6pm. This has worked well for those who have difficulty with the 4-6pm window. Please let me know if you need me to leave your order at the church.
• The bag that you receive each week is to be brought back with your next order. We have been negligent in telling new customers how this works. Don’t feel bad if you return multiple bags, it happens all the time.
• We’re into reusing and recycling. Our clean egg cartons, honey jars, paper and plastic bags, berry containers are some of the items that we can reuse. If we can’t reuse the returned items, we’ll recycle them.
• We do guarantee everything that we sell. If you ever have a problem, please let us know and we will credit your account.
• If there are other products or growers that you think should be a part of Fresh Harvest, please let me know.

Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!

If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.

Recipes

Sauteed Mushrooms with Mustard and Parsley
1 ¼ pounds mushrooms
¼ cup water
½ teaspoon vegetable oil
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 shallot, minced
¼ teaspoon table salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
1 ½ tablespoons cider vinegar
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
½ cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

1. Cook mushrooms and water in 12-inch non-stick skillet over high heat, stirring occasionally, until skillet is almost dry and mushrooms begin to sizzle, 4 to 8 minutes. Reduce heat to medium-high. Add oil and toss until mushrooms are evenly coated. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until mushrooms are well browned, 4 to 8 minutes longer. Reduce heat to medium. 2. Push mushrooms to sides of skillet. Add butter to center. When butter has melted, add shallot, salt, and pepper to center and cook, stirring constantly, until aromatic, about 30 seconds. Add vinegar and mustard and stir mixture into mushrooms. Cook, stirring frequently, until liquid has evaporated, 1 to 2 minutes. Add broth and cook, stirring occasionally, until glaze is reduced by half, about 3 minutes. Stir in parsley. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and serve.

Winnsboro, TX:  Online market-summer closing

Good morning,

Since our transition to Saturday pick-ups, the online market orders have been terribly slow. We realize that most customers prefer to shop the “live market” on Saturdays so this is not surprising. Because of this, the farmers market board has decided it’s best to close the online market for the summer. We will transition back to the old schedule (Thursday afternoon pick ups) sometime in September, so that you’ll be able to shop these wonderful local products during the off season. In the meantime, we invite you all out to our Saturday market, every week 8-noon on Market Street. The produce is getting better every week with this sunshine! As always, if there is ever something specific that you need & you cannot make it to shop on Saturday, please let me know & I’ll try to get it to ya!

We greatly appreciate your support of local producers!!!

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #10

Good Morning CSA ers-
This week’s veggies will include Wild Arugula, Lemon Basil, Muir Batavia Head Lettuce, Spring Onions, Cucumbers, and Swiss Chard.
We are truly in Summer production now! Our eggplant and peppers will be going into the last tunnel to be planted this week. We always start them late, as we are trying to outsmart the nasty flea beetle that devours our small eggplants one nibble at a time. If we wait them out, our baby eggplants will grow big and strong in a matter of a few weeks and be producing beautiful eggplants in about 6 weeks.
Today and tomorrow, our team will be focusing in on planting our sweet potatoes, melons, and potatoes. We are opening new plots on the back of our farm, and this has taken us some extra time to get underway. Ray and I will be raising beds, fertilizing, and covering them with landscape fabric, in hopes that tomorrow Angela can get them planted. We are toying with ways we can add cover crops, that add to our soil fertility and help our soil stay put during heaving rains. I have been searching for ways to intercrop our melons, potatoes and sweet potatoes. One way is to plant corn and clover along side our melons. I have found some research that suggest planting okra along with sweet potatoes makes both plants grow stronger and healthier. Okra is a tough sell on our farm as we cannot get anyone to pick the rascals. When they are small, they are very prickly, and by mid-summer they are so tall that I can no longer reach the okra pods to harvest.
Thank you for your continued support. We appreciate our members and feel that you are farmily. A part of our farm and friends. We enjoy hearing about how you use the veggies we deliver and learning about your lives and families. To me, this connection is so important to the mission of our farm and to my wellbeing. As a farmer I am often tied to this land, rarely leaving, and my circle of friends involve you and the people who farm alongside of me. Sometimes it can be lonely, but it is that smile at the door when I am delivering, and the hug from a long time CSA er, that brings me such joy. I thank you for sharing this journey with me. I know I may be just your farmer, but to me, YOU are my connection to the world. You give me a person, face, family to grow for. YOU are my relationships and I can’t wait to see you each week. I don’t think we do enough sharing with people how important they are to us.
Thank you again for your support and friendships. You are cherished!
Your farmer,
Angela

Market News

This week we see some of the first summer berries listed. Blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries are all starting to ripen, and in the coming weeks we should start seeing a flood of all of them. It ought to be a good year for berries, since we didn’t get any late freezes, the spring was relatively long and cool, and we’ve had plenty of rain. It might be a great season to stock up on blueberries when they’re in their peak and freeze them for later. In the fall, when the cranberries from up north arrive, just mix equal parts of those and frozen blueberries right in a dish and cover with a streusel topping (even a box “apple crisp” topping mix is fine) and throw that in the oven. So easy, and the mix of sweet blueberries and tart cranberries is perfect. Can’t wait!

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park, and Wednesday evenings downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is back as well, Saturdays from 9 to 1, and you can watch for weekly news here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours now on Saturdays from 1-4pm. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
