Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Fresh Harvest for July 14th

Market News

Hello!

Fresh Harvest has been selling the Hershberger family’s produce for over 15 years. They are an Amish family that has provided excellent produce for Fresh Harvest over the years. Abraham relies on a neighbor’s phone to call me every Sunday when they have items available. When I’m not near my phone, Abraham will leave me a message with all the items and quantities that he wants me to list on the Market page. He’ll call me back Tuesday morning to find out what has sold and what he needs to harvest. Today is a first. He called me twice while I was outside and he did not leave a message. He doesn’t trust technology, so he will usually call me back to see if I got his list; but not this week. Anyway, we have a nice selection of items this week.

Blue Honey Farms thinks that they might have one more week of blueberries after this week. I’ve listed Cherokee Purple tomatoes as well as mucho Sunsugar cherry tomatoes. We have added a couple of new varieties of potatoes, Yukon Gem and All Blue. The All Blue potato seems like a novelty, but they are really delicious that compliments their appearance.
It’s unusual to have tasty, local lettuce available in mid-summer. Both Pig & Leaf Farm and RnR Farm have figured out a way to keep the delicious lettuce growing in the heat.

The Peach Truck has freestone peaches this week. They will be set up next to us throughout the peach season.

Dozen Bakery cookies and breads, eggs, granola, honey, and coffee are in abundance.

Hemp Honey and Sorghum are available under Honey.

You have until Tuesday night to place your order.
Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!

If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.

John

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #15

Dear CSA-ers,

This week’s preassembled bag will contain Malabar Spinach, Romaine Head Lettuce, Garlic, Tomatoes (Cherry and Pink Slicers), Dill, Mint, and Swiss Chard. Custom orders can be placed on the site between now and Tuesday evening at https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market
It’s been a week of both unprecedented challenges and successes here on the farm. With Ray, Jonah, Hannah, and Eric visiting family in Minnesota, we were down to the core. This made for extra farm responsibilities for us, and put time constraints on the planting, harvesting, and packing that we ordinarily handle. This caused for some heated moments, but ultimately, we came together and pulled through. We succeeded in fulfilling CSA, ran all three farmers’ markets, and got 14 of our grow beds planted, which may be a week record! Wow!
Even though the oppressive heat, and thick-enough-to-drink humidity makes the cool crisp air of Autumn seem far away, this is the critical time to get Fall crops started and in the ground. One of the most difficult things about farming is getting the timing correct. We must adapt to the uncontrollable elements like weather and find harmony within the rhythm of rhythms. Things being seeded right now include broccoli, veronica, collards, kale, beets, carrots, and radishes. We can’t wait to bring these to you and your loved ones.
On the topic of timings, a vegetable we’d like to highlight this week is our garlic. Growing garlic is truly a year long endeavor. The process began the week of the full moon last October when we planted cloves of garlic. Over the Winter, the cloves made tiny green sprouts and sent down deep roots preparing for Spring growth. Over the Spring, the plants fill out, flower (which you received as scapes), and then go dormant. When the plants go dormant in Late June, we harvest them and begin the “curing” process, which is a means by which the bulbs are hanged and dried for long storage. Now that curing is complete, they are ready for your bags this week and can be stored at room temperature on your kitchen counter. Garlic has been linked to heart health, and we like to believe it’s because so much love goes into growing them. We hope you love them too!

Thanks for being a part of our family,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

Farm News of the Week:

Several New Items

Carter Smith of CS3 Farms writes:

We are back from Florida, where it is hot and humid — just like home! We have another ”traditional” tea available. We are adding Oolong tea because it, like many herbs and other teas, has been demonstrated to have antioxidant properties. It also tastes quite good. We may have some sweet potato greens available, but not a whole lot. If you haven’t eaten sweet potato greens, they are a mild leaf that can be substituted for spinach or a thin lettuce leaf and eaten raw or cooked.

We have more turnips available as well as our herbal honeys, shrub (drinking vinegar) concentrates, nut butters, and other deliciousness.

(Top, L to R): Oolong Tea, Sweet Potato Greens.
(Bottom, L to R): Turnips, Habanero-Infused Honey.

Knottynuffacres has added fresh Thai and regular basil to the market.

Meet & Greet this Friday in Tullahoma

Come to “Nature’s Elite” on Friday between 4:00 and 5:00 to meet some of the local farmers who grow the fresh farm products sold on this market! A few of the farms which will be represented include:
Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Frontier Family Farms
Knottynuffacres
and others as they confirm. Come on down to Nature’s Elite and see some of the goodies we’ll have for sale!

News from Sow’s Ear Piggery:

We will be updating pork listings in 2-3 weeks once a butcher date is set. We hope our customers will be patient for our new products, as this will probably be the best pork we’ve raised and offered for sale.

Weaver Farms has put all their products on “vacation mode” for a couple of weeks. They’ve been blessed with lots of sales of late, and need a little time to restock supplies. But their great grassfed beef and pasture raised pork will be back as soon as possible!

Cindy’s Suds items are also on “vacation mode” this week, and should return next week.
