Siloam Springs, AR:  Online Market is Open!!

www.siloamsprings.locallygrown.net

Make plans to let our bakers do some of your Christmas baking for you! From rolls to pies or specialty breads and cookies they are ready to help you create a beautiful holiday meal!

Speaking of holiday meal, you can get eggs and bacon for a nice breakfast during the week when the kids on are on break or for Christmas morning. Tired of turkey? How about a beautiful, pastured chicken or some pork ribs? You can also purchase a Holiday Ham from Dos Locos Farms.

Our farmers have lettuce in the green house so it should be available soon, weather permitting. Lack of sun and cold temps causes crops to grow at a much slower rate. Butternut squash and fingerling sweet potatoes are still available.

Stay warm this week! See you Saturday!

Champaign, OH:  Rainy Days and Mondays

Hanging around,
Nothing to do but frown.
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.
(Carpenters-Rainy Days and Mondays)

Jump in your way back machine, take yourself to the year, 1975, and find me, with one of my very first albums that my mother let me pick from her Columbia Records Club, and then find me, the album playing on my little turn table that opened up like a little case…not to be confused with the now Crossley turntables…this was the original, then put a hairbrush in my hand, place me in front of my mirror, see my Marcia Brady hair, bell bottoms, and listen to me belt out this tune…

Fast forward to the now…Mondays always get me down, and add in the rain, and there you have it…

So, why not put on this song, take a bit of time, and put a smile into this rainy day Monday, by placing your market orders…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

On Thursdays: Here’s a map.

Market News

The Athens Christmas parade will be held this Thursday night, and it will be impossible to get through downtown. Plan your travel accordingly! We do not open until 4:30, but we will start filling orders earlier if the growers have all arrived and unloaded on time. If you’re coming late in the evening, be sure to give downtown a wide berth!

This is the time for holiday artisan markets, and you can find something going on pretty much every day for the next three weeks. The Indie South fair happened this weekend, and I strolled through the booths for several lovely hours both days, getting ideas for people on my list. I like to highlight some of my favorite markets here in our newsletter and on our Facebook page, because there are just too many to list all of them. However, the Flagpole has done a great job assembling them all into a nice descriptive list. They’ve got an online version here if you didn’t pick up the paper copy: https://flagpole.com/arts-culture/arts-culture-features/2018/11/28/flagpole-s-holiday-market-roundup.

Looking ahead on the calendar, I expect ALG to remain open the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s. Some of our growers might take time off, but we’ll be here to serve those with items to sell and you who wish to buy them.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

Most other area markets are starting to close down for the season or move to winter hours. The Athens Farmers Market is still open on Saturdays at Bishop Park. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is up and running, Saturdays from 9am to 1pm, and you can find out more here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours now on Saturdays from 1-4pm. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Recipes

Sauteed Oyster Mushrooms

This is a quick simple way to prepare mushrooms that really highlights the Oyster mushrooms gentle flavor.

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 pound small oyster mushrooms (any large ones cut into 1-inch pieces), stems trimmed
2 teaspoons cider vinegar

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Sauté mushrooms with 1/2
teaspoon salt until golden, about 8 minutes. Add vinegar and sauté until evaporated, about 1
minute. Season with salt, then transfer to a plate to cool. Serve at room temperature.
Cooks’ note:
Mushrooms can be made 4 hours ahead and kept at room temperature.
