Market News

The weather this weekend was absolutely beautiful. Just perfect for getting outside and enjoying a day at the park, or walking through the neighborhood, or working out in the garden. You might think, what with the daytime temps nearly hitting 80 degrees and the traditional farmers markets all opening up again that it’s the perfect time to put those tomato seedlings you picked up at market or the plant sale into the garden. It is prime gardening season, but keep your eye on those summer plants just a little bit longer! We’re going to have a night down in the 30s this week. That’s enough to severely damage those summer veggies, most of which are tropical plants that can’t handle even the slightest bit of cold. For tomatoes and basil, I’d recommend hold off until the nights are reliably in the 50s for optimal growth. You can start them sooner and they’ll survive nights in the 40s, but it doesn’t do them any good at all and generally stunts them for the rest of the year.

I know when you see those gorgeous plants listed at ALG and elsewhere the urge is strong to go home and put them right into the ground when the weather is like it was today. I have to fight that urge off every year, too, and I’ve had a garden going most every year of my life. Go ahead and buy them and get to know them, but keep them in the pots and bring them inside at night for just a little while longer. They’ll thank you later.

We do have a nice selection of plants listed by our growers, but there are plenty of other opportunities around town to pick up more. The Athens Area Master Gardener Association is holding their annual Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, April 27, 2019 – 8am to 1pm, rain or shine at the Athens-Clarke County Extension Office at 2152 West Broad Street. They’ll have herbs, vegetable plants, annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, ferns, ground covers, seedlings, and bulbs that all come from AAMGA members’ gardens.

Daily Groceries, right up the street from our pickup location at Ben’s Bikes, is hosting their plant sale on the weekend of April 20. I don’t have more details, but I do know many local farmers will be represented there.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The many other area markets are starting to return! The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Par, and Wednesdayevenings adowntown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is closed for the season, and you can watch for their return here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours now on Saturdays from 1-4pm. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Fresh Harvest for March 31st

Market News

Hello!

It’s almost time to plant sweet potatoes again, so I thought this week would be a good time to run a special on them at a $1 a pound. These are #1 quality sweet potatoes, but they need to move out of my office. It still looks like it will be a few weeks before we will have a large quantity of spring veggies. In lieu of the low number of greens and the high quantity of eggs, we’ll reduce the price of Fresh Harvest eggs to $3.50 a dozen. Now I need to find a recipe for eggs and sweet potatoes! Perhaps bacon is a good addition.

Henosis has listed some herbs and edible flowers in the Vegetable category. The Red Bud Flowers sound very interesting. Check out their recipe for making jam.

Bloomy Rind is taking this week off and will be back in two weeks.

We have plenty of granola, honey, and coffee.

A reminder that pick up will be under the trees unless there is bad weather.

If an item sells out, be sure to write in the Comment section what you would like if more becomes available.

The Hemp Honey has been added to the Market page. If you would like to learn more about CBD, here is a link: https://intellicbd.com/
TruBee’s Hemp Honey is 100% pure raw honey with full spectrum hemp extract. Serving size: 1/2 tsp, 24 servings in a jar

Deliveries will continue to be every other week. The next delivery will be Wednesday, April 20th. You have until Tuesday night to place your order.
Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!

If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.

Recipes

Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes with Bacon Topping

4 small sweet potatoes (8 ounces each), unpeeled, each lightly pricked with fork in 3 places
4 slices bacon, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
2 slices hearty white sandwich bread, crusts removed, cut into 1/8- to 3/4-inch pieces
1 teaspoon minced fresh thyme
Salt and pepper
1/2 ounce Parmesan cheese, grated (1/4 cup)
1 large egg, lightly beaten
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1. Place potatoes in shallow baking dish. Microwave until skewer glides easily through flesh and potatoes yield to gentle pressure, 9 to 12 minutes, flipping potatoes every 3 minutes. Let potatoes cool for 10 minutes. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 425 degrees.
2. Cook bacon in 10-inch skillet over medium heat until crispy, 8 to 10 minutes. Using slotted spoon, transfer bacon to bowl. Add 2 tablespoons fat from skillet, bread pieces, thyme, ¼ teaspoon pepper, and 1/8 teaspoon salt to bowl with bacon. Toss to combine. 3. Halve each potato lengthwise. Using spoon, scoop flesh from each half into second bowl, leaving about 1/8- to 1/4-inch thickness of flesh. Place 6 shells cut side up on wire rack set in rimmed baking sheet (discard remaining 2 shells). Bake shells until dry and slightly crispy, about 10 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, mash potato flesh with ricer, food mill, or potato masher until smooth. Stir in Parmesan, egg, melted butter, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. 5. Remove shells from oven and reduce temperature to 375 degrees. Divide mashed potato mixture evenly among shells. Top each filled shell with bread mixture. Bake until bread mixture is spotty brown, about 20 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA 1

CSA WEEK 1

Dear CSAers,
We missed you over the past month! As promised, CSA deliveries will resume this week with our first delivery on Thursday, April 4. Many of you have reached out to us over the past couple of days and it’s been really gratifying to hear your enthusiasm. We hope you enjoy the offerings on the site this week. Spring will start very greens forward and our selection will continue to expand throughout the season. We invite you to enjoy the bounty of seasonal local eating.

It’s been a busy month here with bed preparation, seeding, and greenhouse renovation. We also spent some time repairing damage to two of our structures from the violent windstorms that swept the area on March 14. Though it was a harrowing day, the team was able to pull together and minimize the damage. Being resilient and adaptable is one of the things that agriculture really requires of us. Seeing our team grow in these areas is truly rewarding. To be as transparent as we can, we will be sourcing a few items from the Nashville organic veggie farmers. We did have damage and it took time to repair and reseed. We anticipate it will only be a few weeks until we are back up and running at full capacity.
A vegetable that we would like to highlight this week is our cabbage. We have two different cabbages available right now. ‘Caraflex’ our cone shaped cabbage variety graced some bags before the March intermission and the heads are now even larger. New are our ‘Savoy’ cabbages, which have a uniquely textured leaf, reminiscent of the Tuscan Kale. ‘Savoy’ is perhaps milder than ‘Caraflex’ but both are delicious and wonderful. They are well suited to slaws, boiling, or my favorite, stir fried with a bit of bacon.
We’re so thankful for your support and being patient through the March interim. We’ve got a lot of exciting things coming up and are really thrilled to be bringing you fresh local vegetables again.
Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team
